"The best place on earth," according to almost every local we've met!!
Yes, not only are the locals extremely friendly and helpful - they all believe that they live in paradise. ( I wholeheartedly agree! )
We were a little confused about dates this week and, since we'd extended our hotel stay for 2 nights, we assumed we had more days here than we actually did. Thanks to a conversation with our head waiter at breakfast this morning, we checked our train reservations to learn that we're leaving tomorrow!! Big disappointment as we were trying to decide between 2 day trips tomorrow. (But, also a huge relief to know that we'd escaped the embarrassment of missing our train by an entire day!)
So, we rethought our last day plans and decided to spend the morning enjoying the resort environment and doing a bit of laundry. Mid-afternoon we hopped the shuttle and headed downtown for a final Cairns shopping binge and enjoy our last supper people-watching on the esplanade. The bird and bat noise and activity on the Esplanade was extraordinary for us to observe, but seemed to be run-of-the-mill for everyone else.
A last walkabout among the tree lanterns along the Esplanade and then home to pack before bed.
I must add that, so far, travelling light has been wonderful! A small carry-on size bag and backpack is all each of us is using for this trip. Plenty, so far. Time will tell if I feel the same way when we get to southern New Zealand where the climate will be much cooler.
