Day 12 - Rob, Kate and Squeaky Sand

Tuesday, October 15th

Rob and Kate share their lives with two dogs, Tyson and Zebiya and 2 cats, Jarna and Monster. They all welcomed us into their home with open arms. Rob has even taken a week's holiday from work in order to host us! Our day began with coffee and waffles, requested by Rob and prepared by Kate, followed by a walk with the dogs in the neighbourhood parklands.

Then we hopped into the car for a day tour of the area. It really is beautiful here - rolling hills of dairy and stud farms and lush forests along the coastline of the Tasman Sea. Our first stop was the top of a mountain we could see from their home - Cambewarra Mountain Lookout. From this lookout, Rob was able to point out the lay of the land - the army base where he works and the area where his paratroopers practice, the Shoalhaven River, the highway we came in on last night, as well as some of the beaches they intend to take us this week.

We indulged in a treat of coffee, tea and scones in the tea house on the mountain before heading down, through the city of Nowra just across the bridge from Bomaderry and then, southeast toward Huskisson on Jervis Bay. We did stop at the army base where Rob explained to us the procedures and equipment used for training paratroopers here.

Huskisson is a tourist destination providing all kinds of opportunities for dolphin and whale watching and scuba diving along with the usual seafood restaurants and interesting shops. After poking around in the shops for a bit, we followed Rob's lead into the Huskisson Pub for beer (150 Lashes) and a fabulous lunch of oysters kilpatrick, chili salt squid, bruschetta, Greek salad and chili potato wedges. YUMMY!

Following one of our best Australian meal to date, we headed to Hyams Beach to walk barefoot in the most beautiful fine sand I've ever had the pleasure to experience. It is so fine (almost like flour) that it squeaks when you walk on it. What a wonderful time we had paddling on the shore and walking and squeaking on the beach this afternoon.

On the way home we picked up dinner - several kinds of cheese, baguette, olives, sundried tomatoes, 2 kinds of prawns and Sydney Rock Oysters (enjoying this variety once again is another dream come true for me).
