If I ever moved to New Zealand, I would want to live in Nelson. It's not only the oldest city in this country, it is also the sunniest (so they claim) and is located in the geographical centre of New Zealand. And it's a nice size - about 44,000 people I was told. It's a beautiful little port city with gorgeous beaches, a winding river and a huge variety of big old trees all along the river walkways and scattered throughout the city. Of course, all the spring flowers in bloom makes for a pretty good impression too!
We spent our day exploring Nelson, first visiting the majestic cathedral and then browsing downtown and the Saturday market. There were a couple of fund raisers going on that grabbed our attention and donations - the first was a breast cancer event "Busting Buns for Boobs" where there were a bunch of people (all wearing pink, of course) riding stationary bikes along with a very enthusiastic leader. The second was a class of talented students busking - singing Maori songs (with their teacher playing guitar) in order to raise funds for camp.
We almost omitted the market from our exploration today thinking, "Seen one market, seen them all", however, we were successfully parted with our money at several booths today. Our little suitcases will be taxed when we leave Nelson!
We stopped for coffee and lunch and then organised an outing for tomorrow before enjoying a beautiful walk along the River where I was thrilled to see cabbage trees in bloom.
Back at our hotel, we relaxed for a bit before heading out to the cinema with a plan to see one of several movies showing this evening. Unfortunately, we were unable to see a movie as they were either sold out or selling only front row seats for all the early shows on our list! So we wandered until we found a little Italian restaurant and enjoyed pizza, salad and wine (instead of our planned dinner of popcorn and soda) before heading back to rest up for tomorrow.
